The upstate New Yorker in me, and the tree hugger in both of us, were happy to read in today's New York Times that The Nature Conservancy purchased over 14,000 acres of privately held land in the Adirondack Park.  Very cool.

Slate's "Hillary Deathwatch" widget calculates what litle remaining chance she has to win the Democratic nomination.   Sure, she scored a huge win in West Virginia...and she'll roll in Kentucky.  But seriously - at this point, she's fish food.

Here's an interesting piece in the New York TImes by thoroughbred industry breeder Jim Squires. 

Living just minutes from the New Bolton Center, where Barbaro spent his final months, we're fairly sensitive to the subject of injuries sustained in the horse racing industry.  Squires' public position is surprising for an industry insider.  We can't argue with his conclusions.

NOLA - 2 years after Katrina

New Orleans, a city with a special place in our hearts, will be in the news quite a bit during the next several weeks as we approach the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The New York Times recently published a special section on life after Katrina. It's available online (registration is required, but it's free).

CNNMoney.com, in association with Forbes, is running an ongoing feature titled New Orleans 2007: The Slow Road Back.  Of special note is a piece filed by photo journalist Stanley Greene, documenting how little things have changed in some parts of the city.  It's worth a look.

Mmmm... launch

This week, a report issued by NASA confirmed that astronauts have been allowed to fly while under the influence of alcohol.  Rather than postpone the launches, the report indicates that NASA officials may have allowed intoxicated astronauts to fly on at least two occasions.

The panel's findings did not confirm the identity of those allegedly involved.  We have our suspicions.
